What is important is, what do you know about your body and how does your body react to things; things like chemicals, drugs, foods, alcohols etc. Can you identify the signals your body gives when you are about to menstruate or during menstruation or you just ignore it.

It is very important to know what is happening in your body, so it will be easier for you to quickly figure out what you need to do.

Some women don't know the day they ovulate, which i think is mandatory for you to know if you want to prevent or become pregnant.

In this article, i will emphasize more on ovulation and how you can use it for your advantage.

What is ovulation?

Ovulation is the release of an egg from a woman's ovaries. After the egg is released, it travels down the fallopian tubes, where fertilization by a sperm cell may occur.

Ovulation typically lasts one day and occurs in the middle of a woman's menstrual cycle, about two weeks she expects to get her period.

Knowing when you ovulate each month is helpful because is the most fertile or able to become pregnant around the time of ovulation.

 You are more likely to conceive if you have sex a day or two before you ovulate and the day of ovulation. Therefore, it is important for you to note these days, if you want to become pregnant you can have sex during these days and also to prevent it, you abstain from sex for these days.

A female fetus has one to two million immature eggs called oocytes inside her ovaries at birth, which is all the eggs she will ever produce.

At puberty, about 300,000 of these eggs remain. Approximately 300 to 400 of the remaining eggs will be ovulated during a woman's reproductive lifetime.

Having regular, predictable periods that occur every 24 to 32 days is a likely sign that a woman is ovulating.

For pregnancy to take place, a sperm cell must fertilize the egg within 12 to 24 hours of ovulating. The fertilized egg then travels to the womb, where it can attach to the lining of the womb and develop into a fetus. But if the egg is not fertilized, the uterine lining is shed about two weeks later, causing menstrual flow to begin.

Most women  believe that if they are menstruating, it means that they are ovulating; which is indeed not the case at all.

Some women mistakenly believe that ovulation always happens exactly 14 days after a woman's last period, but the timing of ovulation varies for each woman and depends on the length of her menstrual cycle.

For instance; if a woman typically has 28 day menstrual cycles, she usually ovulated between 13 to 15 days. If her cycle ranges between 27 and 34 days, ovulation usually occurs between 13 to 20 days.

Changes women can observe during ovulation are;

  • Change in Vaginal Secretions :- A woman can observe change in vaginal secretions few days before she ovulates, her cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus, produces a type of mucus that is thin, clear, slippery and stretchy. This change in cervical mucus occurs when ovulation is approaching and her ovaries are getting ready to release an egg. The day after ovulation occurs, cervical mucus undergoes another change and it becomes thicker and cloudy.
  • Change in Basal Body Temperature :- Shortly after ovulating, many women show a slight increase (about 1degree Fahrenheit) in early morning body temperature.
  • Rise in Luteinizing Hormone:- About 24 to 36 hours before a woman ovulates, her levels of luteinizing hormone increase. A rise in luteinizing is a signal for the ovary to release an egg. This hormone increase can be detected by using an ovulation predictor kit, which can test a sample of urine in the days leading up to ovulation. When a rise in luteinizing hormone is detected, the test will show a positive result.

A woman is fertile or able to become pregnant only during a certain part of her monthly cycle. This is a 6 day period, which is 5 days before ovulation and the day a woman ovulates.

Studies suggest that intercourse is most likely to result in a pregnancy when it occurs in the 3 days leading up to and including the day of ovulation.

If a woman is getting her period on a monthly basis, but not getting pregnant, it may be because she is not ovulating. An ovulation predictor kit can  be helpful to see if you are ovulating or not. A woman may want to begin using the kit about 10 days after the start of her last period. If the test shows that ovulation is not occurring, it's necessary to check in with gynaecologist or your doctor.

One of the possible cause for infertility which affects women between the ages of 14 and 45 are problems with ovulation. There are many reasons why a woman may have ovulation problems, which are;

  • Blocked fallopian tubes
  • Abnormal level of hormones
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (pcos) ; a condition in which levels of certain hormones are abnormal and a woman does not get her period or it is irregular.
  • Underweight
  • Stress and excessive exercise
  • Emotional or physical stress

In summary, knowing the day you ovulate is important if you want to become pregnant or prevent it. For the prevention of pregnancy, some women in combination with family planning such as contraception pills e. g. Postinor 2, levonogesterel, also intra-uterine device (IUD method), withdrawal method and other forms of family planning methods are successful in preventing pregnancy.

Also, for some women who want to become pregnant, should get readings of their menstrual cycle, check if their menstruation is regular, and know the days before they ovulate i.e 3 days leading up to and the day of ovulation. Any sexual intercourse  during these days can lead to pregnancy. If in any way you know you are not ovulating, check with your doctor, some drugs may be prescribed to stimulate your ovaries to release an egg.
